The children’s voice is very important to us at Shaw. We have a school council and an eco council which meet regularly to discuss ways of making our school even better. Children stand for election and are selected for these roles by their classmates.
The School Council
The children value their school highly and enjoy having a say in decision making.. Their input represents an important element in the running of the school. Children may notice issues that teachers may not be aware of, and their contribution helps the school improve.
The school council is the voice of the children. For example, they are involved in discussions about recycling, behaviour, awards, and considerations like playground and school grounds improvements and systems for organising playtimes.
Each class from year 1 to year 6 has a class council that meets regularly. This is a whole-class meeting that discusses class and school issues. Key Issues from these meetings are taken to the school council for discussion. Each class votes in school councillors. There are two councillors from each year group.
Eco Council
Our eco council is made from members of each class who are voted in by their classmates. They meet regularly with Ms Cotton.
The eco council has developed an Eco Code which is displayed in every classroom (see PDF below). Every class in the school also has an eco area for which they are responsible. These areas can be viewed in the document below.
Each year, the eco council aims to develop an action plan for the year's improvements. This year, they are aiming to work toward the prestigious Green Flag award.
